Identity threats and ideas of superiority as drivers of religious violence? Evidence from a survey experiment in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania

Religion has become increasingly contentious in recent years. Faith-based discrimination, hostility and violence seem to have increased worldwide. But how can faith lead conflict? In this article, we test the impact of two important dimensions religion that been neglected previous research: belief ‘one true religion’ perceptions threats by other religious groups. Putting these potential drivers test, conducted a representative survey experiment with 972 respondents Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Results show one tested dimensions, others, increases support use defend one’s own group. This is particularly case for religiously intolerant characteristics such as pre-existing threat perceptions, unfavorable views on intermarriage, or superiority their faith. contrast, find relatively weak evidence prime readiness violence. Our findings implications policy: We conclude appeals leaders others intolerance toward faiths contribute more conflict.
